DESCRIPTION: Anna Atkins was the first woman to embrace the emerging medium of photography for scientific study, using it to reveal the intricate beauty of algae and ferns. Her albums became pioneering works of photographic practice, seamlessly bringing together art, science, and botanical observation. For the first time, this edition reproduces British Algae and Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns in their entirety, featuring more than 550 ethereal cyanotype impressions. Accompanied by introductory essays from Peter Walther, the volume places Atkins’ work within its scientific and art-historical context while celebrating the remarkable legacy of a pioneering woman in photography.
